Former Kaduna Senator Shehu Sani has issued a stern warning to President Bola Tinubu regarding the looming specter of job losses in the federal civil service as a result of the full implementation of the Oronsaye report.
Tinubu recently mandated the complete execution of the report from the Presidential Committee on the Rationalisation and Restructuring of Federal Government Parastatals, Commissions, and Agencies, led by retired accountant Stephen Oronsaye.
Initiated in 2012 under former President Goodluck Jonathan, the committee’s recommendations, known as the Oronsaye report, have resurfaced, stirring intense debate and concern among Nigerians.
While acknowledging the potential benefits of streamlining government operations and reducing expenses, Sani urged caution, particularly regarding the anticipated job losses for thousands of federal civil servants.
In a statement posted on his X account Monday night, Sani applauded the move to address governance costs and streamline federal agencies. However, he underscored the need for careful consideration of the human impact, emphasizing the imminent threat facing countless civil servants.
“The Oronsaye report has languished for over a decade, and its implementation is now imminent. While this signals progress in cost-cutting and organizational efficiency, we must tread carefully,” Sani cautioned.
Timeless Update revealed that the 800-page report, if fully enacted, could result in the displacement of over 102 heads of agencies and parastatals, heightening concerns over the fate of federal employees.
As the nation braces for potential job cuts in the civil service, stakeholders await further directives and measures to mitigate the fallout from the Oronsaye report. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
